King of the Goats

About the Production

Matchstick Theatre’s first new work, and winner of the “Fringiest Fringe” award, Henricus Gielis’ King of the Goats, was presented as part of the 2019 Halifax Fringe Festival at the Bus Stop Theatre from August 29th-September 7th, 2019.

Henricus Gielis is the King of the Goats. But what even is a Goat? In this new comedy from Matchstick Theatre, Gielis compares his career as an emerging actor to those society has deemed the Greatest of All Time. Raised on TV and movies, this generation’s actor can’t help but compare their interpretations and creations to the immortalized and iconic performances they grew up with. If Gielis can perfectly impersonate Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet or Cole Sprouse’s Jughead, is he not just as great? Through the reproduction of a series of classic and contemporary monologues, the King of the Goats goes on a journey of self-discovery where he finds that every representation is a misrepresentation and that the only true Goat is the Goat within.
